Catenians help Cardiff NightShelter @ St Peter’s

Cardiff 36 Circle of the Catenian Association are honoured to have been able to provide much needed financial assistance to the NightShelter at St Peter’s Church in Roath.

The Cardiff Churches NightShelter provides a welcome refuge in the depths of winter to those unfortunate enough to find themselves sleeping rough on the streets of Cardiff. The NightShelter operates every night of the week in a different church from mid-December to the end of March. St Peter’s welcomes its homeless guests on Friday evenings. This is a truly ecumenical enterprise as all the churches involved, except St Peter’s, are Methodist, Baptists, Temples and Seventh Day Adventist,

The NightShelter provides accommodation for up to 24 homeless people, male and female, Guests are provided with a 3-course dinner along with suitable table games and reading material, a bed for the night, breakfast and washing facilities and help with various items that they may need during the day.

The NightShelter at St Peter’s, based in the Youth Hall in Bedford Street, lacked suitable washing facilities for those accommodated overnight. Peter Maunder, Cardiff Catenians President in 2016/17, selected the NightShelter as his President’s Charity and at the Circle meeting at the end of April, he was delighted to present Fr Tony Furlong, Parish Priest of St Peter’s, with a cheque for £4,300 to enable a washroom with showers to be installed along with an extension to the kitchen. Peter himself, along with his wife Marilyn, help out at the NightShelter.

Fr Tony thanked the Circle for their generous donation which would make a big difference to the people using the NightShelter.
