As You Like It

Boy meets Girl – possibly!!

In the magnificent surroundings of Cardiff Castle, Cardiff Circle paid their annual visit to the outdoor theatre on 5 July 2013. Blessed with a glorious summer evening, 35 brothers, their ladies and some friends attended a superb performance of “As You Like It” given by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, before which a picnic was enjoyed by all. As was the case with the original 17th century performances of Shakespeare’s plays the company is all male playing both the male and female parts. As the plot of “As You Like It” involves some cross-dressing this was further complicated by the fact that the cast was all male. This all results in the following synopsis of the production and plot ….. “a boy plays a girl, who disguises herself as a boy, and pretends to be a girl in order woo a boy, who doesn’t know that the boy is in fact a girl he has previously fallen in love with. In turn, the girl disguised as a boy attracts another girl, also played by a boy, who doesn’t know that the object of her desires isn’t a boy” …… simple really !
