Stroke Association Presentation

During his Presidential Year 2017/18, Cardiff 36 Circle Immediate Past-President Michael Halloran designated the STROKE Association as the Beneficiary of the Circle’s charitable fundraising. Michael’s wife, Linda, had suffered a Stroke (haemorrhagic) in early February 2016 but has made a very successful recovery. A cheque in the sum of £3,776.00, which had been raised through a very successful Golf Day, Auction Evening as well as raffles and donations, was presented at the August Circle Dinner to Alan Drury – Fundraiser for the Stroke Association in Wales and Nicola Dando – Life after Stroke Coordinator.

Responding on behalf of the Stroke Association, Alan stated that the money is to be used for Research to develop new treatments and ways to prevent strokes, as well as assisting those who have suffered the devastating effects of a stroke. Alan pointed out that approximately 152,000 people suffer strokes each year in the UK, of these one in five is fatal within one year and approximately one third who survive are left dependent on others for help. He also pointed out that Stroke Research does not receive anything like the same investment as groups working to alleviate other conditions, such as cancer or diabetes.

Alan thanked the Members for their generosity and kindness to a very worthy charity.
